I have this thing…I hate having fears so, I do whatever I can to get over them (or ‘face them’ as they say). It is for this reason, that I find myself back in B.C. I have not snowboarded since I destroyed my wrist and I am petrified to go riding again but, in order to fully get over it I have to get back on my board. I have to ride the run that changed everything…

I have to make a decision.
I have returned to British Columbia in order to meet with one of the top orthopedic surgeon in the country. The strength and mobility in my wrist was not where I wanted it to be so, I am considering having another surgery to improve this. Due to the extent of the damage done to my wrist an MRI was required in order to get a better picture of why I am experiencing the pain that I am.
The results of the MRI indicate that a portion of the top of my radial bone is gone, and a portion of what is still there is dying. Since, there is very little healthy bone for the remaining wrist bones to attach to they are shifting sideways, towards my ulna. The only thing that can be done to fix this, is to completely fuse a portion of the remaining wrist bones to the radial bone. It is believed that this will eliminate the pain on the radial side of my wrist, however this will not necessarily decrease the pain on the ulna side of my wrist; it could rather increase the pain on the other side because currently, there the reason for this pain is unknown.
Fusing my wrist will eliminate wrist movement, so it will be as though my wrist is permanently in a wrist brace.

THE GOOD NEWS!!!

About 3 months ago I started intensely practicing yoga, and I cannot believe what a difference it has made. I have been practicing most Bikrim yoga (hot yoga) which has warmed my tense muscles allowing them to stretch easier while also building muscle strength. It has made such a difference that I may no longer even need surgery!

I always find myself at a loss for words when I get asked this question…’how is the wrist?’ Overall, my wrist is doing extremely well, it is getting stronger all the time and has a great range of motion, considering.
Realistically, however, it is not perfect. Above is an x-ray of my left wrist, what I wish my right wrist looked like. Below is what my right wrist actually looks like…not quite perfect.
.

.

.
I now have a couple options…
1) Leave my wrist as it is, it will continue deviating, arthritis will form and in 10 - 15 years it will be fused together. Fusing it will eliminate any pain but will also almost eliminate my range of motion.
2) Have surgery, where a structural bone graft procedure is preformed, probably using a bone block from a cadaver (deceased person). Having the surgery will potentially increase strength and mobility while, also decreasing the probability of needing to fuse it down the road. However, I have had to go back to B.C. in order to meet with a surgeon who is willing to do this complicated procedure.
I am currently in B.C. and will meet with the surgeon in the next couple weeks to decide what to do.
And that is it…not great news but realistically, it is only a wrist which, even at its worst is not that bad!

Last week I had the chance to take a few shots on the set of The Last Bill. The amazing guys at Abalak Productions won a Bravo Fact grant to create the short that will premiere on Bravo next year. Here is a sneak preview from behind the scenes.
